Assessing Emissions from Active and Abandoned Coal Mines
Based on mine and geological characteristics, the characteristic size of the emission zone for each coal mining basin will be defined. By using software tools and the coal resource maps, the emission sources within the gas emission zones will be defined and quantified for their contribution to coal mine and abandoned mine methane potentials.
Maps cover the time period of 1934-1936, project was intended to continue through 1938. There are ca. 1159 possible sheets. The set includes some base maps without any mine information on them. Some maps, including some base maps, show oil and gas wells and whether they are active or abandoned, in addition to coal seams.

Most of Kentucky's underground mines used a method called room-and-pillar mining, whereby 20 to 50 percent of the coal is left in the mine to support the overlying rock. In instances where the remaining coal pillars are insufficient to bear the weight of the overlying rock, subsidence of the mine roof will occur.
